AVID

AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination

The AVID program began in PPS in 2004 at McDaniel (formerly Madison) High School, which was also the first AVID school in the state of Oregon, becoming certified in 2005.

Simply, AVID trains educators to use proven practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college, and a career, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

AVID Schoolwide

  • What Students Need - AVID students receive intentional support and mentoring in three major areas that help them become confident individuals who can successfully navigate life and career. The areas are:
    • rigorous academic preparedness
    • opportunity knowledge
    • student agency

  • What AVID Educators Do - teachers and other adults on a school campus play an important role in student success. To bring about this transformation, educators must:
    • insist on rigor
    • break down barriers
    • align the work

AVID Elective Class

  • AVID Secondary Elective Class (grades 6-12) is an essential component of the AVID College & Career Readiness Framework and is for one period a day. Students receive additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses.

  • On average, 99% of PPS students in the AVID Elective class graduate high school on time AND continue on to college.

AVID Resources for Parents

  • As a parent, you play an integral role in your child’s academic and social development. You lay the foundation for their future. If you’d like to learn more about how AVID can help your child thrive, please contact the AVID Coordinator at your child’s school.
  • See the "AVID Effect" - listen to stories of AVID graduates.
